Programs: Adobe XD
Team: Chloe Meyer & Vineela Donthi
Time Span: 3 weeks
In May 2021, I participated in an Adobe Creative Jam competition with my partner Vineela Donthi and we placed in the top ten finalists out of hundreds of participants. We created flite in Adobe XD and finished it in 3 weeks.
Moodboard, personas, wireframes, final prototype
Your challenge is to design a third-party tablet app that serves as an editorial experience and travel guide. Use technology in a future-forward way, to personalize the in-flight entertainment time for the guest.
My partner and I set these goals for our app so we would know when we had completed the project:
- Easy to use and intuitive
- Provide a personalized experience
- Accessible offline
- Various presentations of information (images, articles, blog posts, etc.)
In this stage we essentially planned out the app–we wrote a list of features we wanted the app to have, decided what topics to include information about, and created personas to help us decide on these questions. We focused on our persona “Maria” and made sure we had features she cares about in our prototype.
Features to include:
- Short quiz to personalize content
- Weather forecast
- Informational articles
- Interesting blog posts
- Learn some of the language
- Music recommendations
- Travel notes
Topics to include: Attractions, Food, Transportation, Weather, Language, and Music
We also looked at other apps and used them as inspiration for how the app should appear visually. We then made a low-fidelity wireframe using all of this information to plan out the organization and flow of the app. From there, we refined our designs until we were ready to submit. I personally created the main visuals in Adobe Illustrator, like the gradient background and plane motif.
We followed the prompt and made flite, an interactive travel guide fit for any vacationer looking to learn more about their destination before they land. The preliminary quiz curates results relevant to each specific traveler and requires a flight number to create a more personalized experience.
flite offers a wide variety of features to explore at both the final destination and layover location. Unlike a traditional travel guide, flite lets travelers learn about anything like nearby attractions, local languages, music, and events. The notebook feature allows the traveler to reflect on the things they explore and learn. The simplified interface is intuitive and accessible, while the bright colors and rounded edges create an exciting and engaging appearance.
Our project was chosen to be in the top ten and I presented our project to an online panel of Adobe judges!
Looking back, I would change the quiz feature in both visuals and performance. The questions aren’t phrased well, they should be more to the point and the answer options are unclear because they are simply images without descriptive text, which is also not user-friendly for visually-impaired people. Also the text sizes are too large and would look more professional if smaller.
For being my first endeavor into prototyping and product design, placing in the top ten exceeded my expectations. This is one of my proudest projects.
